The KINA Collection is handcrafted in New Zealand.

New Zealand is a country that has a lot of sheep. Tens of millions of sheep actually. They are not native to New Zealand but they sure do like it there. Because New Zealand is lush and green and fertile and yep really looks just like all those tourist pictures you see of it.

The climate, especially down in the South Island where most of the sheep live, is one of extremes. Hot hot in the summer and snowy cold in the winter. This means the sheep grow this incredible wool to cope with it. Super fine, super long, very white. Their wool keeps them cool when its hot and warm when its cold. No where else in the world do sheep grow such fantastic wool. So. Thats why there are lots of sheep in New Zealand. And their wool is amazing. And made into lots of amazing things.

Lots of sheep means lots of lambs. Very cute in the spring to see them all bounding through the fields. Lots of lamby frolicking for sure. But sometimes they die. Maybe there are triplets and the small one does not make it. Maybe a sudden cold snap or unseasonal snow storm gets the vulnerable new born. Ahh... the tragedy.

 

Waste not, want not.

So. KINA is born. Made from these lambskins that have passed of natural causes. We believe it would be much more of a tragedy to waste such a beautiful natural resource. Or worse, create a synthetic material in its place to shoe and clothe our children.

The lambskin is naturally stunning. Tight little curls and super soft to the touch. We encourage it to take center stage. KINA pieces are simple and classic. They are smart and fit well and look great. Our booties stay on. Really really really well. People tell us this a lot with KINA fan mail and such. And parents come back and buy larger sizes as their baby grows because they love them. And the kid loves them and all their friends love them. And you wont get your KINA booties in a big old plastic-zipper-carry-box thing. Just with a humble wee tag. Why create even more waste?
